Music at St. Stephen's

Music is a large part of our worship at   St. Stephen's.  During the 10:30 am Mass on Sundays our superb, largely volunteer choir, conducted by music director Dr. Dan Hardin, sings a fine repertoire of Anglican anthems, psalms, and motets.

The Choir always welcomes new members.  If you would like to join, please email Dan Hardin or come to a rehearsal.  Choir rehearsals are on Thursday nights from 7:30 to 9 pm in a meeting hall above the Great Hall.

Our Music Director

Offertory anthem(sung in Latin) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Kathryn Smith, soprano

Praise the Lord, all nations; praise him, all people. For he has bestowed his mercy upon us, and the truth of the Lord endures forever.  Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and forever, and for generations of generations.  Amen.

from Vesperae solennes de confessore, K. 339

Communion anthem   Raymond Hahn

Gentle Savior, keep me near your loving heart; gently draw me from the world apart.  Mighty Savior, close me in your sheltering arms, for if you will shield me I fear no alarms.  Gracious Savior, help me when my faith would fail, for if you uphold me doubt cannot prevail.  Tender Savior, lead my by your spirit’s power; let me never falter in temptation’s hour.  Holy friend and savior, hear the prayers I make; let me live and labor only for your sake.  Amen

Kathryn_Smith

Katherine Smith is a 2009 graduate of Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Fl, and is a Masters student at Florida International University.  She has been heard at FIU as the stepsister Noëmie in Massenet’s Cendrillon and as a soprano soloist in Handel’s Messiah under the baton of Maestro Grzegorz Nowak.  Katherine was a participant in the 2009 Johanna Meier Opera Theatre Workshop in Spearfish, SD, and has previously performed as Amelia in Menotti’s Amelia Goes to the Ball, Antonia in The Man of La Mancha, and Little Red Riding Hood in Into the Woods at Florida Southern College.  She also sang Susanna in scenes from Le Nozze di Figaro and Mabel in scenes from The Pirates of Penzance in Florida Southern’s 2009 Opera Gala.  Katherine grew up in the children's choirs of First Presbyterian Church of Eustis, Fl, and began singing with her father in their adult Chancel Choir at age 13.  She was previously the Soprano Soloist at St. David's Episcopalian Church in Lakeland, Fl.

The Organ

In addition to the good fortune of having our excellent choir and organist, we are blessed with a three manual Schantz organ.  That means our organ has three keyboards.  In addition to the usual two, a third, or "Choir" manual is added on at the bottom.  It plays a variety of delicate stops that are most suitable for accompaniment.
